Damn, it took me over a year in total, but I finally finished all 25 episodes of Journey to the West!
Here’s what I gathered from the episodes:
- Everyone wants to eat the Tang monk, Xuanzang, because rumor has it that they’ll become immortal.
- If they don’t want to eat him, they want to marry him.
- Xuanzang is a damsel who always needs saving by his disciples.
- Despite that, he will not hesitate to call his loyal disciples ugly.
- His disciples are so ugly that people visibly cringe upon seeing them.
- Zhu Bajie is especially ugly, and often lusts for women and food.
- Sun Wukong likes to call Bajie an idiot and is the real hero of the show.
- Wukong will kick everyone’s asses and save the day.
- Sha Wujing is a pretty mediocre character who does not stand out, but is a good, loyal disciple.
- Wukong has a lot of tricks up his sleeves.
- And he is notorious in heaven for wrecking it hundreds of years back.
- But it turns out being notorious can really help you network with the gods.
- The yaoguai are all animal spirits that has/will serve some deity after being defeated and revealing their true forms.
- By the way, do not trust random young women in the woods who need help.
- 80s special effects are charming.
I don’t think I’ll be watching the second season, but it feels good to finally finish this Chinese classic!
